OPEI Cyprus - Activities at local level

Our Board of Directors decided to fund the creation of an afternoon center for elders, next to the Main Elder care center in Paphos.  It will undertake all costs involved, including annual rental, renovation and construction costs, painting and basic equipment. This initiative will create opportunities for elder people during the afternoon, when the main Eldercare center is closed. This afternoon center will operate as a workshop place for socialization and for organizing social activities for local elders. When the renovation works are finished, we will provide funding for social and charitable activities, excursions, and intergenerational cooperation activities.  

Moreover, our organization members are supporting local communities through participation in educational activities such as the Adult Education Centers courses.  Elders have the opportunity to participate in courses and keep themselves active and productive in their later life. In communities where there is a large number of pensioners coming from other countries, and mostly from UK, our members have assisted them in filling the applications for Greek courses. In due course, when the renovation activities are completed, by the end of March, we will organize an opening ceremony coupled with info-days on opportunities for elders.

Local activities in Romania

1.     Partnership with local authority General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection Dolj (DGASPC) do organizeeducational activities to be undertaken by volunteers with the elderly in the complex "Saint Mary" based in Craiova.

2.     Recruitment of volunteers: recruiting a total of 16 volunteers, social workers and teachers.

3.     Organizing a training course for volunteers which included the following topics:

- Rights and responsibilities of volunteers

- Integration into organizational culture

- Social integration of marginalized older persons

- Integration of occupational therapy in elderly

- Occupational therapy techniques, the art of playful for elderly

- Legislation on volunteering in the elderly

4.     Involvement of volunteers in implementation activities with elderly people in the complex "Saint Mary" in  the period March 12, 28 May 2012, which includes weekly activities performed such as social and occupational activities.
